The US Department of Defense have 3.2 million employees, according to data compiled by the World Economic Forum. The US also leads the world with the largest private employer – Walmart. They have 2.2 million employees globally (with 1.3 million in the US) and they operate 11,000 stores in 28 countries. The fifth largest employer is the UK’s National Health Service, employing 1.7 million people.
Tenth on the list are Foxconn, the Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturer. They are famous for producing Apple’s iPhones and iPads. Their workforce of 1.2 million generated revenue of $136 billion and operating income of $4.6 billion in 2014. In stark contrast, General Electric, with 307,000 employees and operating in more than 170 countries had revenue of $148.9 billion and net income of $15.3 billion in 2014. The iconic Ford Motor Co. has 224,000 employees and operates 90 facilities globally. They had sales of $144 billion and net income of $3.1 billion in 2014.
